As the person or persons in charge of helping that child work the program we have set out, the child may have ideas of what they want, and may add to the plan, or even change it. The child is encouraged to participate in making the plan.
To help the children prepare for a life of meaning, we demonstrate and teach how to make relationships, take responsibility and problem solve. We also work at teaching the tenants of the 5 Needs, the 4 parts of behavior, and the Quality World.
All of this has several benefits, including the opportunity to repair past mistakes or lack of getting what they want. The children are helped and encouraged to succeed in school, and many of our children use this opportunity to catch up credits they are behind in. If there are relationships that need repair we help them make those changes. When the children have emotional disturbances or disturbed perceptions, we use therapists, outside community supports, group meetings, family meetings, tutors, medication when needed, and continual, non-judgmental support.
That's why I believe Atkinson Family Services gives children and their families time and tools to prepare and repair.
